What is the impact of the May Algorithm Update on online businesses?

So far, there is no information about this update’s impact on businesses. We know that the primary updates are intended to make search results more relevant to users. Although the update is available today, it will take a couple of weeks to roll out fully. From our experience, you still have two weeks to start noticing the changes.

Google’s Public Liaison for Search, Danny Sullivan, notes that changes to site performance in search results are to be expected.

Core updates are changes we make to improve Search overall and keep pace with the changing nature of the web. While nothing in a core update is specific to any particular site, these updates may produce some noticeable changes to how sites perform…

When a major update is released, Google is known to refer to the same guidance that was published in 2019. Yet, some webmasters follow those lines; others prefer to wait and see the impact and adapt the website’s optimization afterwards.

Either way, your trusted SEO agency is responsible for minimizing the impact, whatever it might be.

What to do to minimize the impact of the latest Google Update?

If we were to offer a piece of advice to all those concerned about this major update, we would just say the following: check your website NOW. You still have some time to fix it, as the algorithm takes two weeks to complete.

Check your mobile friendliness. It can be done here:

Check your Page Experience. It’s in your Google Search Console. And it had better look like this…

Page Experience check

…than like this…

Page Experience failure

These two, along with other significant criteria, have a significant influence when ranking a particular project, as they are primary ranking factors. And they can be technically fixed easily if your developer knows his trade.

Check your backlink profile. If you have created low-value backlinks or competitors did this to attack your authority, you can now disavow some of them in Google Disavow Tool from Google Search Console.

Google General Recommendation for each core update

Google’s general recommendation for core updates is as follows:

  1. Expect widely visible effects, such as increases or decreases in search rankings.
    2. The term “broad” refers to the fact that core updates do not target anything specific. Instead, they are intended to improve Google’s overall systems.
    3. Pages that fall in rankings are not penalized; instead, they are reassessed against other web content published since the last update.
    4. The top recommended way to deal with the impact of a core algorithm update is to focus on providing the best possible content.
    5. Every few months, there are major core updates. Sites may not recover from one update until the next one is released.
    6. Improvements do not guarantee recovery. However, failing to make any improvements almost guarantees no recovery.
